Which countries actually use a points system
Scoring systems that look alike differ in the one way that matters: what the score is measured against.
Australia sets a pass mark. Score 65 or more on the points table shared by its subclass 189, 190 and 491 visas and you can sit in the pool. Canada sets none — Express Entry scores candidates out of 1,200 under the Comprehensive Ranking System and ranks them, so what you need is whatever the cutoff happened to be in your round — and since 25 March 2025 a job offer adds nothing to it, which many ranking calculators have yet to catch up with. New Zealand’s Skilled Migrant Category takes a third approach: a small threshold of six points, drawn from one skill indicator plus New Zealand work experience. Immigration New Zealand has changes to that visa scheduled for 24 August 2026, so treat any six-point score as current-for-now.
The United Kingdom is the honest exception. Its Skilled Worker route is often called points-based, but what it actually sets is a list of requirements — an approved sponsor, an eligible occupation, a minimum salary, English ability — that you either meet or do not. There is no total to maximise and no pool to be ranked in, so a UK calculator returning a score has invented a scale the rules do not contain.

How a points test works
A points test converts your circumstances into a score, and the score decides whether you can be considered — not whether you are accepted.
Each criterion is scored independently: age, language ability, work experience, qualifications, and usually something about your partner or a regional commitment. You claim your score yourself, typically through an online expression of interest, and it sits in a pool. The government then invites candidates from that pool, either everyone above a threshold or the highest-ranked, and only then do you apply for the visa. Claims are verified against documents at that point, so an optimistic self-assessment surfaces as a refusal later rather than an error now.
Two numbers matter and are easily confused. A pass mark is the minimum to be considered. A cutoff is where invitations actually landed in a given round, and it is usually higher.

What page-one calculators get wrong
Three errors run through the calculators currently ranking for these terms, and every one of them is checkable against the official rules in an afternoon.
The first is a points test that does not exist yet. Australia has had a points-test review running since April 2024, and a number of pages now present a redesigned test as though it were law, with start dates ranging from July 2026 to July 2027. Nothing has commenced: Schedule 6D of the Migration Regulations has not been amended since 2019, which is what the amendment history in the current compilation says.
The second is quieter and more expensive. The instrument specifying English test scores was replaced on 7 August 2025, and PTE Academic thresholds are now set per component instead of as one flat score for all four. Calculators still showing the old flat figures are sending people to book a test against a threshold that was repealed a year ago. The third is Canadian and the largest of the three. Job-offer points were removed from the Comprehensive Ranking System on 25 March 2025 — two provisions repealed outright, not adjusted. Calculators on page one still award them, at least one in the occupational vocabulary Express Entry adopted in November 2022, so that page has been maintained since and is still wrong. The correction also runs the other way, which almost nobody says: candidates invited before that date keep the points under a transitional provision, and a job offer still scores under Canada’s separate skilled-worker selection grid. What we do differently
Every points value on this site is read from the legislation and rendered from one versioned data file, so the calculator, the tables and the text cannot drift apart. Each criterion carries a link to its instrument and the date we last checked it.
Your score appears as you answer, broken down criterion by criterion, with no email gate, no multi-step wizard and no consultation wall in front of the number. That is a deliberate contrast with lead-generation calculators, and it is written into our coding standards so it survives future monetisation.
When rules change we update the data first, then the wording, then the page date. When we get something wrong we correct it in public with a dated note rather than editing quietly.
